Photography is capable of characterizing space giving it a meaning of place. The dialectic between space and place in the field of photography is portrayed in the current theoretical debate, however comparative studies between the various projects of contemporary Portuguese and Italian photography lack. They share an interest of photography in the territory itself, depicted in several catalogues produced for the "Meetings of Photography" of Coimbra between 1980 and 2000. This project intends to contribute to a reading of contemporary photography, in a comparative perspective between the two countries, to re-establish historical links and highlight how photographers can "build" places.
